Pancreatic Enzyme Replacements

Depletions

Pancreatic Enzyme Replacements/Nutrient Depletion:
  • FolateFolate: According to secondary sources, reduced folate levels may occur in some people taking pancreatic extracts (such as Pancrease®, Cotazym®, Viokase®, Creon®, Ultrase®) possibly due to reduced absorption.
  • IronIron: Based on a review, pancreatic enzyme supplements, such as Cotazym®, Creon®, Pancrease®, Ultrase®, and Viokase®, may reduce iron absorption possibly by binding iron or altering pH (5335659). Clinical significance may be unlikely, except in people with cystic fibrosis who need pancreatic enzyme supplements for prolonged periods and who have other factors contributing to iron deficiency.
